Icon painting traditions and methods are more than thousand years old. At "Traditional Icons" studio we paint icons the same way they had been painted for centuries. Boards for Icons are made of solid wood : linden, cypress and jelutong, panels are covered with gesso on natural linen. 
For painting we use tempera - an egg yolk based paint made with natural pigments ground by hand from minerals such a malachite, lapis lazuli, orpiment, cinnabar etc. Icons can also be gilded with 24-carat gold, using natural material adhesives, in Byzantium and Russia gold and silver were believed to have some divine qualities and icons made with them were highly valued. 
By keeping traditional and centuries-proven methods of our icon painting we guarantee that our icons will retain their beauty and will be admired as family treasures for generations, especially if they are placed in kivotos and protected from environment.
